We continued
east across the southern portion of the upper peninsula of Michigan, arriving
in St Ignace along the shore of Lake Huron.
We were lucky to get a spot for two nights at the Tiki RV park and
campground, which was very close to the ferry dock for the boat trip to
Mackinac Island. There is a free shuttle
service from the campground to the dock provided by the ferry company. We did
have to shift sites for the second night, but that is not a big problem for us.
We got an
early morning ferry to the island and on this trip the ferry also went under
the Mackinac Bridge as an extra attraction.
It was a great weather day for both the ferry ride and visiting the
island.
The island
has been occupied for thousands of years. It had a part in both the revolutionary
War and the War of 1812. A brief history
summary can be read here. Today, the
island is a major tourist attraction that has visitors from around the world. Around
80% of the island is a state park with many hiking and biking trails. The waterfront area of the island is filled with all the things tourists look for. In
the late 1800’s, most motorized vehicles were banned from the island, so the
major modes of transportation are horses, bicycles and feet.
We explored the
downtown area and enjoyed the great weather and things to see.
We then opted
for a horse carriage tour of other areas of the island.
The most
popular attraction on the island is the Grand Hotel. That will be the subject of our next post.

Nice that you got the island a very interesting place to visit but a major tourist trap. So interesting to see and the Hotel is a place all to itself . Keep enjoying.
We loved visiting Mackinac Island and always wondered what it would be like in the "off" season if there is one. Beautiful pictures from your carriage ride.
Lucky you two to take an island tour. You saw places the rest of us didn't. Great pictures.
