Returning to last summer’s Louis and Clark trip. Our next stop was Fort Benton, MT known as
the birthplace of Montana. The city was founded in 1846 and became a major
center for trade, transportation on the Missouri River and starting off point
for gold miners, settlers and others heading north and west. Its role
diminished with the arrival of the railroads.
As we drove into town we passed by a small hurt of buffalo owned by a
local businessman. We arrived just in
time to see a newborn calf being delivered and welcomed into the herd.
Today it is a quiet small town on the Missouri river that
attracts many visitors to the historic Fort Benton Montana’s Heritage Complexof six museums, art galleries and Historic Fort Benson itself. We spent the
good part of a day here, but to truly see it all, it would take several days.
