The Sleeping
Bear Point Coast Guard Station Maritime Museum, now located near Glen Haven, has
the original lifesaving station from the early 1900’s. It was moved from its original location due
overtaking sand dunes that would have buried it. The museum is designed as a
learning center about the Coast Guard, the lifesaving service and the shipping industry
on the Great Lakes.
During the summer
months they have various educational programs including demonstrations on the
use of the equipment and boats. For those interested in Great Lakes maritime
history, it is a must see.
Our last
stop for the day was the Leland historic district. For over a century this district served as
the home base for the local fishing industry.
Today it survives as a tourist attraction including some history and many original structures
from the active fishing period.

I always enjoy seeing Coast Guard history well preserved and nicely displayed. We Coasties have much to be proud of. :c)
I thought this station was one of the most well and completely preserved I'd ever seen. Your pictures are wonderful especially the one of Anneke at the wheel!
