Labadee, Haiti

Our final stop on the cruise was Labadee, which is located on the north coast of Haiti. This is a private area controlled by RCCL.  It consists of several beaches and buildings to accommodate cruise passengers for a day at the beach.  The ship docks at the company pier and it is a very short walk to the attractions.

For those who did not wish to walk the modest distances involved could take a tram.  A ship's lunch buffet was provided ashore. Plenty of beach chairs were available.

One of the big attractions was the zip line from the hill top over the ocean.  It claims to be the highest over water zip line in the Caribbean.  It was very busy all day and we enjoyed watching folks fly by while we sat on the beach. The charge for the zip line that lasted about 1 minute was $100. We decided to give it a pass.

You could also charter various boats for exploring the area, fishing, what have you.  We chose to wander and relax on the beach(es).

Lots of  vendors were willing to sell you local handcrafted  items.  We did pick up some hand carved items from the artist hall.  The outdoor vendors  were very pushy and we chose to avoid them.

Chuck, I really like your cruising style and next time feel free to invite me along.

Lovely beaches! I don't blame you for staying on the ground - who needs to spend $100 for vertigo! I just need to stand on a handy chair for that thrill.

As usual, your photos are fantastic and make me wish I was there.

Looks from your wonderful pictures like a beautiful place. I hope the RCCL enclave helps employ some of the poor local people and bring a bit to their economy. I'd pass on a $100 zip too and would spend my time on those beautiful beaches.

Haiti, is a place on our list of countries to visit. The scenery there looks spectacular both on the beach and in the mountains.

Looks like you had a nice relaxing day there.

That is a lot of money for the zip line. The one we did at Copper Canyon was 500pesos ($42CAN)for Chihuahua residents and $700 ($56CAN) for everyone else (we managed to sweet talk them into letting us go as Chihuahua residents). That price included one of the longest ziplines in the world (it took about 2min 20sec) and it also included you ride back in the gondola.

Never thought about Haiti as a destination. You're the first people I know to have gone there :)

On another note though, I love Anneka's t-shirt. Where can I get a Keep Calm and Turtle on Tee?

Well, the zip line would have been fun but doubt it would be that fun. I'd rather wiggle my toes in the sand and sea.

Not sure I could make the step off on that zip line, but I'd like to try. I'm not much of a beach person...

I too would have chosen to sit on that beautiful beach and just enjoy the scenery. The zip line might be fun but not at that price lol!!

Who'd of thunk that Haiti is a tourist destination? My memory of Haiti is being off shore on a SAR case for two days in a storm heaving my guts out. I would have much rather enjoyed Haiti the way you did it. ;c)

Beautiful beaches. That zip-line looked like fun - for adventurous types anyway!
