From land to sea

Our Alaska land adventure was coming to a close.  We had an early morning departure from Cooper River to Whittier, Alaska, where we would start our week cruise on the Sapphire Princess.  Along the way we would make a stop to see another of the older glaciers in Alaska, have a quick lunch and flea market stop in Anchorage.

There is a rather unique part to this trip.  In order to get to the cruise ship dock in Whittier, you must travel thru the train tunnel, which is just wide enough to accommodate the rail cars.  It is an active train tunnel and there is an elaborate control system to allow cars and commercial vehicles to also use the tunnel.

The ship boarding was quick and efficient and we were underway by six PM for our first destination -Yakutat Bay.

Again, your pictures are fantastic! I think Anchorage could be just about any western city from most photos I've seen of it.

I have found your trip to be very interesting. Would you think about doing a post and giving your opinion as to if this way of visiting Alaska is worth the cost? I drove there in 2004, and would certainly like to visit again, but I'm not sure about doing the driving thing again.

That's quite a cruise ship! Your pictures of the scenery are great. I thoroughly enjoyed your trip.

I'm just amazed at how the weather has held up so nicely for you, not that you're complaining. :c)

I'd be interested in your answer to Judy's question, we're kicking around a 2015 visit.

Add my interest to Judy and Paul. Your pictures are fantastic and I have really enjoyed going along I only wish it could have been in person. I can't believe all you have done on this trip.

I remember the Whittier Tunnel well. It was when we were waiting for the tunnel to open to vehicles that we spotted our very first black bears - two of them rolling and playing in the mountain. The ride through the tunnel used to be even more interesting before 2001 when they used to load vehicles on flatbed railcars for the ride through the tunnel. Missed that experience by a couple of months.

Such beautiful pictures. And I have the same question as Judy. Would you do the trip again?
