Along the California Trail

Today we traveled from the outskirts of Reno to Elko, NV. Our route was along the California Trail, which today is I80.  Since we were passing by Reno, we thought we at least needed to do a drive thru the two main streets.  It was a nicer place than I expected.

Driving along the interstate, I could imagine the difficulties of those quarter of a million people who traveled this route in wagons and on foot to reach the California of their dreams. Every mile of the trail had 10 graves to mark the route.  We stopped just short of Elko to visit the California Trail Center that captures the hardships and successes of the journey.  A very worthwhile stop.

We weren't all that impressed with Reno - thought it looked pretty run down. But that California Trail Center was really impressive and very informative.

I agree that the Trail Center looks really impressive and informative. I hadn't heard of it so thanks for that. And thanks for showing me Reno since I would never see it without your pictures.

Reno has a nice bike/hike trail along the Truckee River (and that's about it). We keep missing the CA Trail Center, but one of these days .... Traversing these old wagon routes leaves me shaking my head at the peoples' stamina, fortitude, and the dreams that took them over such perilous territory.

That Trail Center looks like it's very well done, I guess I saw the elephant is sort of like eating an elephant one bite at a time.

I see I agree with all the others....the Trail Center looks like a very nice and informative place!! I can only imagine the hardship those early settlers experienced as they traveled.

We've spent a little time in Reno but mostly as a place to trek out from. We haven't checked out the Trail Center but maybe that's something we should do in the future.
