The Madrid Bend

As we continued north towards St. Charles, MO and the start point of the Lewis and Clark  expedition, we spent the night near the town of Madrid, MO.  We had heard about the recent flooding along the Mississippi the last week or so.  So we drove the few miles to Madrid and found a place along the dike to observe the river.

While there was some flooding still in evidence, what struck me was the events of history that passed by this small town displayed on river front plaques.

The sad story of the forced migration of the Cherokee people to reservations in the west and the deaths that occurred.

Perhaps the most important to the people of Madrid is the fault line they found themselves living over.

the water is high everywhere - there is even flooding along shores of Lake Ontario.

My mom grew up on a farm about 50 miles east of there. She heard stories about the river changing directions after an earthquake. She remembered minor earthquakes happening frequently - she said you could tell when one was coming because the mules would go crazy in the field! You got some very good photos!

Great photos of the high water levels and surrounding area.
Never realized there was a fault line in Missouri.
Be Safe and Enjoy!

It's about time.

Glad you survived standing on the fault line. If it had been me there, it would have caused an earthquake for sure! ;c)

I bet the people of New Madrid were saying, "Who's fault is it, anyway?" :-)
I bet your guys were happy to escape unscathed! (kidding)
