A stop in Montgomery

Our last stop on this trip was Montgomery, Alabama.  We have been by here many times without much interest in stopping.  Several blogs I follow have mentioned some of the interesting things to see in the area, so we decided to make a quick stop on our way home.

We stayed at the campground on Maxwell Air Force Base. There is an outdoor aircraft display located between some of the old style officer housing units and the center for international training.  While not large, it has some interesting items and is a very nice area to walk around.

We did not have much time to spend exploring the area, so we headed downtown first thing Saturday morning just to get a quick idea of the city.  We are still a bit concerned about finding a place to park the motorhome in cities, but decided to hope for the best.  As it turned out this was a not a problem at all.  We drove around  downtown  to get an idea of both the capital area and the business sections.  We checked out the Capital building and surrounding structures along with the First White House of the Confederacy.  We were able to park in front of the Capital and the White House and were practically the only vehicle around for part of the time.

We will have to come back when there is more time to explore the whole area.  Right now, we are focused on our next trip that will begin soon to Alaska.  This is very exciting for us, as we have had this adventure on the list for a long time.

I, too, enjoyed Montgomery and the surrounding area last year. I can't wait to follow your journey to Alaska! Can't believe it's been almost ten years since I was there. Seems like only yesterday...

I drove through Montgomery on my way from Savannah to CA, and on to Selma. I drove past miles of strip malls, fast food joints, box stores, etc. Wish I could have seen the downtown, but pulling a 5th wheel I was not to keen on driving in any more traffic than I was already in.

Alaska is the only state I haven't been in, and I will be eager to read your account of it as it is now in 2013. Most of the blogs I've read about Alaska took place several years ago and I wonder if much has changed for the RVing community.

Now that is the kind of traffic and mobs of people that I like to go driving in. Love those empty streets and finding good parking spaces. Like Gypsy - we're hauling around a big fifth wheel so we don't do a whole lot of "city" stuff.

You sure lucked out in your visit to the government buildings in Montgomery. That's a great shot of your RV with the whole place to yourself. Alaska will be quite a trip, looking forward to following along.

Alaska! I will be so anxious to read about your trip. We've been there on a cruise, but doing it in the RV is at the top of our list. It's still a couple years away but we're ready :) Safe travels, have fun!

I too am really excited to read about your Alaska travels. I don't know anyone who has been there lately and it has always been on my bucket list. Denali National Park especially. Hope you go there.

Sorry I commented twice on your previous blog. It didn't show it as going through. I have never been to Mobile but have heard a lot about it.

I remember Poopsie ;-)

Can't wait to follow-along on your Alaska adventure. We've been twice now and the state remains as one of our favorites. If you're going to be in the Anchorage area for a while when you get there, don't forget to visit the Eklutna Spirit Houses and the musk oxen farm. Oh, and Independence Mine is lots of fun ... all in the outskirts of the big city and well worth the drive.

What a nice outdoor aircraft display.

We have stayed in Montgomery over night twice and haven't had time to visit the Capitol. I told Paul...next time!

We've only been to Montgomery in our former life and not in our RV life. Then, we didn't worry about a place to park the rig. Now I'm sure we would. Glad you found a spot.

The airplane display on the lawns was really a nice touch.

Alaska - now, there's a big RV adventure in th making.

Wasn't that you behind the controls of that airplane? I'm sure that's the kind of plane you learned to fly in...

Alaska! Wow, that is very exciting. Would you be so kind as to bring me back a couple barrels of oil? I hear they have lots of it up there. :cD

We haven't been to Montgomery yet. I think I'll have to add it to my list of things to see before we leave Alabama.

Nice post and great pictures. We also stayed at the campground at Maxwell and took in the White House of the Confederacy. Very interesting and a nice excursion.
