Whale HO!

Yesterday we decided to take the whale watching jet boat out about 30 miles into the Atlantic in search of whales. This area regularly has several species in the area. One of these is the endangered Right whale. I have a special interest in this species, as back in the 90’s I was Commanding Officer of the Coast Guard Unit in Philadelphia, when a lost young Right Whale got herself turned around in the Delaware River. This tuned into a bit of a media circus as we and other agencies worked for over a week to push this animal back out to sea.

The Friendship V traveled at over 30 knots and caused quite a wind over the deck. It was a great ride and quickly got us to the area where whales had been sighted earlier. We got to see a number of Right whales and had a good time meeting and talking with a number of folks.

Loved Bar Harbor when we were there. We remember it especially because we accidentally drove the motorhome downtown with the car in tow on July 4th weekend with CRAZY traffic. We were on the right street in the wrong town trying to find our campground. The whale photos are wonderful. THanks so much for sharing, we can't wait to go back and see Acadia National Park again as well.

Great pictures! I'm glad you got to see your whales. I remember that whale you helped rescue. I don't recall how it ended though...hopefully well for her.

You two take the most awesome pictures. We did whales watching in that area years ago and loved it. Glad you are having such a great time. Enjoy the ride.

You sure had a great whale watching trip. Great shots of the Rights. It's ironic that the whales were so named because they were the "right" whales to go after since their high blubber content kept them afloat after they were killed.

Maybe one of those whales was the one you Coast Guard guys saved! Thanks for the show, wish we could have been there.

Glad you got to see them! We will never forget getting to see the Grey Whale and calf in the Klamath River this summer... even though the story ended badly for the mama, she touched many people by having her calf there with her for several weeks...
