We saw moose

This was another of those occasions where we adjusted our travel schedule base on the weather forecast. Since we try to maintain a flexible schedule, we like to travel in good weather. Since the forecast for yesterday was heavy rain and today was going to be mostly clear, it seemed to make sense that we should wait one day to leave Bar Harbor. Not for the first time, this faith in the crystal ball readers was misplaced. After a light drizzle early in the day yesterday, it turned into a nice day all along the coast. Today started with light rain and continued to get worse. Luckily, I was able to find the controls for the wipers and the lights all worked. I wonder how those guys sleep at night.

It was a rainy and slippery ride and again saw a number of road signs warning against hitting the many moose that apparently cross the road regularly. We have seen this sign in many places since first entering the Adirondack region in New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. They leave you with the impression that they are everywhere. We arrived at the Freeport Village campground around 1 PM. Luckily, we decided to make a rare reservation based on the increased traffic at our last campground after Labor Day weekend. When we arrived we found that we had the last reserved site and that there were two more folks arriving that were going to be allowed to park in the driveway overnight. The park has around 35 sites with about 30 filled with seasonal folks. It is close to the freeway and town.

The town of Freeport, ME is home to the L L Bean Company and its flag ship store along with three other specialty stores nearby. I was a bit unprepared for the fact that the whole downtown area has become an outlet mall. I have seen lots of tourist trap towns with all kinds of gift stores, but not one that was literally an outlet mall. I am glad to report that we finally spotted our first pair of moose, and they were not even along the road.

Hopefully, we will find other interesting things to do nearby, since we will be here for three days before heading to southern New Hampshire Saturday to visit a friend.

I would not be real excited about an outlet mall downtown. But sighting the moose would be fun. As long as they weren't in the road.

I really don't think you can count that as "seeing moose". I don't think the moose read those road crossing signs either - I have yet to see an animal where the sign tells them to cross. I guess they are just a bunch of jaywalkers. That is unusual - an outlet mall right downtown like that. Hope you get some better weather.

A moose sighting is a moose sighting...and these were locking horns (perhaps over the favors of a female) ... how lucky is that :-)))))))) I bought a great $9 shirt on sale at that flagship store ... that was many, many years ago.

We also try to avoid bad weather as much as we can while driving but it seems like that there are only two jobs for people that fail that often, weather reporter and politician!

My, that's one big boot! :)

LL Bean is one of my favorite stores but I haven't met anyone that's been real impressed with the store there. Guess I'll just keep ordering online.

A Moose is a Moose - no matter where or what kind!

That is a big, big boot!

Haven't done the Freeport area yet..usually do the Conway outlets..coming over from Canada considering we pay 15% sales tax here on everything we buy..everything at the outlets is a great buy for us Canadians..
Glad you had a moose sighting..they are a dime a dozen here in our area, we constantly have to be on the lookout while driving around here...
be safe

You haven't seen a moose until you accidentally come upon a cow moose and her calf browsing on your own trail on your own property! That happened to us in Montana. We survived the encounter, but didn't have our camera with us.

Nice of those moose to hold still so you could get a good picture.

Even I might have been able to get some part of a moose in my photo...

I would love to see some of those moose! Never heard of an outlet mall in downtown...very different. Sounds like you two had a very interesting day.

I would love to see some moose but I don't think I'll sight any in Florida. Wish I was in the cool weather with you!

Chuck/Anneke - definitely agree w/your opinion of Freeport!!! we made mistake of going there on our first RV trip in 2004. we couldn't believe all the outlet stores geared to young, well to do, YUPPIES! traffic was a nightmare even on a weekday & we spent less than 30 minutes in the store & beat a hasty retreat. never again! corrie & dan

oh, I am so jealous! it's kind of a standing joke with us that moose know I'm coming so they all send out a memo to hide!

I love l.l. bean's jeans!!!
