Maine Maritime Museum

The Maine Maritime Museum is located in Bath, Maine on the site of Percy and Smith shipyard. This ship yard completed the largest wooden sailing vessel, the Wyoming, ever built in 1909. An artistic sculpture marks the site where the Wyoming was completed. The museum has several buildings from that ship yard and displays covering the maritime history of Maine.

Just down the road is the active shipyard, Bath Iron Works, which had completed many military and commercial vessels over its decades of operation. Currently, they are focused on building destroyers for the U S Navy. You can take a tour of the Bath Iron Works from the museum but understandably no pictures are allowed. Since I have spent a great deal of my life in shipyards around the world, we decided to give this a pass.

The museum itself was well laid out with displays on all facets of the maritime industry in Maine. You can even sign up to work on a wood boat project in the boathouse. During our visit there were several new wooden kayaks being completed by expectant owners.

A Nova Scotia built cod fishing boat designed for the Grand Banks was laying at the dock for tours. The tour and explanation by the volunteer staff gave a real insight in the fishing operation and life onboard.

For those interested in things nautical, it is a must see.

Another great recap! Pictures are great as always! You should work for the tourists center in Maine. You will bring the people there just by them reading your blog! Enjoy the ride.
