Maine in our rearview mirror

We are now reconnected after a three day stay in an electronic black hole, where we enjoyed a visit with a long time friend from my Coast Guard days.

Before leaving Maine, we wanted to get one last coastal fix. We headed south toward the coast with the first planned stop at Wiscasset, which is well known for the homes of shipmasters and owners from a bygone era. These homes were interesting, however, the show was stolen by the little lobster stand on the corner where the only bridge to the coast is located. This stand was mentioned once on CBS Sunday morning and now has become a cult place to stand in line and get a lobster roll. I am sure this is much to the dismay of the several other larger establishments on the other corners. For us and other travelers was the huge traffic jams caused by the steady flow of customers crossing the street in front of the bridge. On the way back there was an over a mile backup centered on this restaurant.

Our first stop was Boothbay Harbor, where we enjoyed lunch looking over the harbor and the many gift shops in town. Then we headed farther out to the coast and decided to try some of the small roads leading to a headland. We were rewarded with finding a small unmarked beach with its very own lighthouse that was privately owned that provided some great views.

Finally, we stopped at Southport public dock to enjoy the fantastic views of the Atlantic and the surf breaking onshore around the lighthouse on a small offshore island. This would be a great place to spend a lot of time (in the summer) watching the ocean do its thing.

Sure looks like a great place to say good bye to Maine. But standing in line for a lobster roll would not be my idea of a good time.

We had thought at heading toward Maine when we leave RI, but decided to leave it to another time.

Glad you are enjoying the sites.

Aah, Boothbay Harbor. Years ago, overnighted in this town on our way from Maine to Mass. Got a great deal on a water-view room at hotel ... only problem ... the view was socked in with thick fog that pretty much shrouded the scenery the entire time we were there :-)))

Great pictures!! Thanks for that last look at Maine. We have not made it to Maine yet but after your post/pictures I really want to get there soon. :-)

I know Anneke wouldn't wait in line two minutes for a lobster, but what about yourself? :)

It's funny how some places get a reputation that will make folks stand in line for hours. I wouldn't wait in line that long even if it was free!

Beautiful photos of the docks and harbour.

Such a beautiful place to visit! I know you hate to say "good-bye." I really like the photo on your header!

We sure agree with Rick about waiting in line -- even if they were handing our a twenty dollar bill to all comers!

We're taking a new look at future travels. If all goes as dreamily planned, 2015 will be our year to go to the distant northeast!
