Country Living

After leaving New Hampshire, we found it necessary to change our planned routing to avoid the flooding in southern New York State and in Pennsylvania. The PADOT indicated on their web site to avoid travel in the eastern third of the state if at all possible. So, looking at our options, we decided to cross New York via the New York Thruway, at least as far as Rochester. This would allow us to also stop again and visit my sister and her family.

Enroute we stopped near the small town of Oneida at a Native American owned RV Resort just down the road from their casino. Since we are not that excited about gambling, we wanted to visit the Oneida community, another of the 1800’s religion based communes that sprung up around the United States. This was at least our third such commune tour. Like the others, the founder and leader had a very unique way at looking at life. I have linked several sites that go into detail on the community. What really separates this community for the others is their approach to open marriages and sexual relations among the men and women of the community. To say their approach upset the standards of the day would be an understatement. Like all the others, the experiment failed. But out of the process, Oneida Corporation was formed that still is a household name.

On this short visit with family, we decided to stay at my sister, Karen’s, place. She lives on ten acres with lots of room for all kinds of activities and outlying buildings. This is a completely different atmosphere from housing developments in the suburbs. We enjoyed catching up on events and spending some time with our great nephew –Camden.

My sister is big on decorating for each season and I was amazed at the effort and amount of stuff that she has assembled. I could certainly get into this country living, but upstate New York is not on my list for the winter months!

Having lived about 100 miles from Rochester for 18 years, NY is not in my winter plans ever, either! :)

I did not realize you were so close. We chose to go across NY from Michigan this way so we could stop and see Niagara Falls. And I decided to cross through Massachusetts and Connecticut and take the ferry across the Sound rather than deal with new York City. I hate driving through there with a passion. I will have to next month in order to head down to Kentucky. No, NY is never in my winter plans ever again as well! Safe trip across to you.

I enjoy the efforts of others who take the time to decorate for the seasons ... doing it myself; not so much. :-)))

Your sister's place is amazing. I'm sure you had a great time there but, I agree, I wouldn't like the winters! Travel safe.

Wow, what a beautiful estate! But we would also shun that part of the world in winter time

Put us on the list of NO for NY winters.

As for decorating...we were among those that LOVED it while we were in our stationary lives. We overdid it all the time beginning for Halloween/Fall and then onto Christmas. We still do it a bit since we usually work at a Pumpkin and then a Christmas lot.

That is the only thing we miss about our old lives...
