Made it to the Keys

Well, not the southern keys, but to some of the northwest Florida keys, in particular, the Cedar Keys. After a coast to coast trip across Florida, we have arrived at the fledgling Cedar Key RV Resort, which opened just a few months ago. While there is still work to do here, it looks like it will be a pleasant place to stay, when visiting the area. The sites are a good size and reasonably level with full hook ups and free WI-FI. They have hopes of selling RV lots and making it an exclusive destination.

When deciding to come here, we expected that this was not going to be a huge tourist area, but rather a quiet out of the way place. One of the first hints that this would be so was based on looking at our street and maps program at the normal view, there were no roads visible on the map to reach Cedar Key. After zooming in until nearly the max, we found how to get there. After now being here a few days, our assumptions have proved to be mostly correct. The area known as the Cedar Keys was first explored by the Spanish in the 1500’s, but some archeology research suggests that there have been people living here since possibly 500BC.

Today, the population is still under 1000 and is a mix of fishing and tourism. Walking around the main village of Cedar Key, it resembles a small version of Key West. There are the bars, restaurants, gift shops, and even a sunset viewing area. It is clear that the economy has taken its toll here with a number of the businesses closed and others that may not be far behind. There was one store in town that immediately reminded me of Al from the Bayfield Bunch. I trust you all can see which one that might be.

It will be a nice place for us to spend sometime in the relaxed mode.

Looks like an interesting place, but I have a couple of questions. What is that leaning building in your header? What are the prices like for your site down there? Are you close to the water? Inquiring minds want to know. :)

Relaxing is a good thing!

Oh, this looks like our kind of place. We enjoy small, quiet out of the way places with personality. It appears this place has all that. Another one for the list :)

Enjoy your time there.

I figured it out, but they spelled "Cursmudgeonalia" incorrectly!

Cedar Key looks like a nice little place.

I believe that the leaning building is an old small house/fishing camp like those that you see farther south in the keys.

We are paying $25 a night for our stay here. It is about five miles from town. There are two campgrounds closer, one is just five tight spots by a small motel but are on the water. The older is an older looking place with mostly seasonal sites.

This is definitely a low key place-(some pun intended) :)

You should stop in at the Lowkey Hideaway. Pat and Cindy are fellow RVer's and are now running this little Motel/RV spot. It is small and on the main road as you enter Cedar Key. Even if you don't stay there you should stop in and say hi. Great people. We only spent 2nights there in March of 2010 but loved Cedar Key. Nice quiet spot and some of the famous clam chowder too.

Hey, I saw the old "Curmudgeonolia" sign in that store window! Definitely an Al kind of place. Kind of ironic though as the sign below says "high speed Internet"!

Looks like a 'quaint' and rather interesting little place to spend some time.

My fear of going to Florida is the thoughts of people, people, people & traffic, traffic, traffic everywhere but that little place in the keys looks more to my liking. We would have to come by boat & slip quietly ashore in the night to blend in with the surroundings so nobody knew we were there:))

Loved the Daytona post. I'll put it on our Bucket List.
Don't forget to visit the clam farm or the right goin' in to town. Cedar Key is a quaint little town.
