Happy Birthday-US Coast Guard



Today we celebrate  223 years of  United States Coast Guard service. This military service continues to provide an important and valuable service to our country. I remain proud that I was a part of its history for 30 years.

Like me, many of the ships in today’s pictures are retired, but the Coast Guard remains strong and continues to labor for the good of the country.

The Owasco (header photo) was my home for 14 months on North Atlantic patrols including winter North Atlantic Ice patrols, long since replaced by technology.

    The Owasco lives on. At least part of it does. There is a shipboard firefighting training school at NWS Earle, NJ. The superstructure of the Owasco is there. It is set on fire by instructors and the students have to put out the fire by going inside it. I trained there in the late eighties.

    So, I've had a hot time on the bridge of the Owasco.

    Great header picture. Happy Birthday Coast Guard. Please don't tell anyone that they are my favorite branch of the military. Especially my dad, he was a Navy man or my nephew, he's a Marine.
